Sony Creates New Company Dedicated Exclusively to PlayStation

Breaking from Sony Headquarters in San Mateo, California: Sony has announced the creation of Sony Interactive Entertainment, LLC, a new company dedicated entirely to PlayStation hardware, software, content, and network development.

President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Andrew House wrote in the press release,

“By integrating the strengths of PlayStation’s hardware, software, content and network operations, SIE will become an even stronger entity, with a clear objective to further accelerate the growth of the PlayStation® business,”

To summarize, nothing major is going to change with PSN or any other PlayStation services. Essentially, it’s some billable hours and pencil pushing for the legal department. The press release says that the new company will start doing business on April 1st of this year.

Sony’s financials have been shaky lately, to put it delicately. The company sold off its VAIO PC division in February of 2014 to focus on their mobile hardware side, which is also seeing declining sales. Sony’s digital camera and pro video divisions, along with PlayStation, are mostly responsible for keeping the company afloat.
