Look Out – Verizon Dropping Droid Eris Updates On You Tonight

‘Tis the season for OTA updates from Verizon it seems. Verizon Wireless just started rolling out Android 2.0.1 updates to its Motorola DROID fleet across the country, and now has the Droid Eris in its sights. Before you get all excited, this is a bug-fix and system enhancement update, not the Android 2.0/2.1 update that has been confirmed for the Eris in the first quarter of 2010. The Droid Eris ROM 1.16.605.1 patch will be rolled out to your Droid Eris through an over-the-air (OTA) update from Verizon. Verizon will begin the nationwide update starting in a few hours (12 midnight ET).

The update enables a new in-call screensaver mode that will require you to press the “End” key twice to end a call. It will improve the Droid Eris’s ability to switch from 2G to 3G networks, and should make for better SMS/MMS delivery.
