Free Online OCR Service

I recently read  a post on Lifehacker about a newly launched Free Online OCR Service called succinctly Online OCR.  I was a bit skeptical. The service claims to:

  • Recognize text and characters from scanned documents (including multipage files), photographs and digital camera captured images. Service includes Zonal OCR for recognition specifically zoned text from a scanned image.
  • Receive OCRed text or converted file and integrate directly into your web site or executable program.
  • Convert OCR results directly to your favorite formats including Adobe PDF, Microsoft Word,

I tried out the service myself and was very pleased with the results. I signed up for an account so that I could use the full features. It is so new I was able to sign in with my first name as username. The FREE service only scans to text and therefore does not retain formatting. I scanned a document with both graphics and text. It was fast, easy and had remarkable results. With an account it is not entirely free for all of the features. After recieving 5 free credits (1 credit counts for 1 page) you can buy credits for bundles of pages:

You may earn more free credits in their Bonus Program by

  • Linking to their service  on some well-visited website, forum or blog = 5 credits. Please no Warez or adult sites or the like.

  • Writing an article or blog post about the service = 20 credits
  • Create a tutorial video about using the service and place on some well-visited website = 30 credits.
  • Purchasing greater amounts of credits. If you purchase 400 credits =  plus 40 credits.

I  scan documents  very infrequently, mostly for graphic applications but Online OCR comes in handy  for those moments when I need quick and efficient translation from a pdf or scanned form without changing the settings on my scanner. What do you think?
