Microsoft goes back on it's demands for refunds

We recently reported to you that Microsoft was demanding some of the money that it had given it’s employees back (see http://blogs.cosmicthings.com/techtalk/microsoft-cuts-1400-employees-and-then-asks-for-severance-package-refunds/). Now, Microsoft goes back on it’s decision and sates that the employees can keep the money.Amid a wave of criticism, Microsoft is backtracking on a decision to require laid off workers to pay back money that the software maker said was in excess of its planned severance, CNET News has learned. Over the weekend, Microsoft confirmed it had overpaid severance to some workers and underpaid others. At the time, the company did not say how much money was involved, but sent the workers who were overpaid a letter saying they would be required to pay back the money in excess of the severance they were due. On Monday, Microsoft human resources chief Lisa Brummel said the company was reversing course.   For full article, go...

New bebo upgrades announced

AOL continues to upgrade the Bebo social network it bought in 2008, layering in more functionality from the social data aggregator SocialThing it also acquired that year. In December, we covered Bebo’s new Social Inbox, which gathers social updates from your friends on other services and shows them on your Bebo home page. There’s also a new feature, Lifestream, which will collect data from the Bebo user’s external sites and put them all into one data stream that any Bebo friend can see. This feature is reminiscent of the social network aggregation function in FriendFeed. AOL on Monday is announcing several more enhancements to the Bebo service, although not all of them will be available to users...

New Bill would make ISPs keep almost permanent logs for police

Find full post at http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-10168114-38.html Republican politicians on Thursday called for a sweeping new federal law that would require all Internet providers and operators of millions of Wi-Fi access points, even hotels, local coffee shops, and home users, to keep records about users for two years to aid police investigations. The legislation, which echoes a measure proposed by one of their Democratic colleagues three years ago, would impose unprecedented data retention requirements on a broad swath of Internet access providers and is certain to draw fire from businesses and privacy advocates. “While the Internet has generated many positive changes in the way we communicate and do business, its limitless nature offers anonymity that has opened the door to criminals looking to harm innocent children,” U.S. Sen. John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, said at a press conference on Thursday. “Keeping our children safe requires cooperation on the local, state, federal, and family...

Microsoft Cuts 1,400 Employees And Then Asks For Severance Package Refunds

What’s the best way to create an HR firestorm in three easy steps? If you’re Microsoft, layoff 1,400 employees, give them severance on the way out, and then ask for part of it back. Better yet, let’s add a step four: Make sure you do all of this during one of the worst recessions in U.S. history. Stir. Sounds almost too terrible to be true, and yet there’s photographic evidence that exists proving Microsoft overpaid a bunch of its former employees and now wants its money back. Oh, and some employees were apparently underpaid as well. What do you think you would do in this situation? [TechCrunch] -Kevin...

Ubuntu 9.10 to include "cloud computing"

Ubuntu 9.10 will be code-named Karmic Koala, Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth announced on a posting on the ubuntu-devel-announce list Friday. As usual, efforts surrounding the Linux distribution are divided between two target deployments, desktop and server. The desktop goals are primarily around “first impressions,” with Shuttleworth indicating that “boot will be beautiful.” He also promises that the appearance of Ubuntu will change significantly: The desktop will have a designer’s fingerprints all over it – we’re now beginning the serious push to a new look. Brown has served us well but the Koala is considering other options.   Find the full article...

Old Macbook vs. New Macbook

Now, I only have access to an old macbook pro, which I enjoy very much. However, it seems it’s time to look at the new mac on the block. Apple’s new process in creating a macbook requires only one piece of metal; and its just that. The body is smooth, with a shiny metallic feel. The new macbook has all its ports on one side, which makes arrangements of cables and such much easier. Performance benchmarks are about the same, with the new macbook slightly faster. The more important update to performance is the use of the new Dual-GPU integrated intot he motherboard. One is a power-saver, cutting down battery usage and backlight power. This less powerful GPU runs basic software on the less graphical dependent side. The other card, The new, integrated NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, is good, but not much faster than the old pro’s card. I was not overly impressed with the screen. Why would apple consider changing the old macbook screen to a new all LED lit one? LED displays poor quality gray, instead giving a true dark black. Overall, I can’t complain about shiny new toys. But If I were buying a laptop, I would gladly go for an old macbook pro. link...
